Nauryz in California: Spring, Traditions, and Friendship

The Kazakh diaspora of Silicon Valley, together with the Consulate General of Kazakhstan in San Francisco, organized a large and heartfelt Nauryz celebration. For the first time on the West Coast of the United States, more than 500 guests gathered for such an event — with music, traditional food, national costumes, and, of course, a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan expressed special thanks to Mikhail Guterman and his wife Natalia. Thanks to their support, the celebration went far beyond a local event — it resonated with the community and became a truly unforgettable occasion, a bridge between cultures.

Guests were treated to traditional Kazakh dishes — baursaks, plov, Nauryz kozhe, and other national delicacies. The festive atmosphere was enriched by the sounds of kyuis played on the dombra, folk dances, and vibrant costumes, all of which sparked great interest and a warm response from everyone in attendance.

Special attention was drawn to the traditional sports competitions — tug-of-war and the game of lyanga. These lively and energetic contests brought together participants of all ages, capturing the spirit of Nauryz — strength, agility, unity, and joy.

“The celebration served as a reminder of the importance of cultural roots and mutual support, especially when far from one’s homeland,” noted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Source: www.gov.kz).

Nauryz continues its journey around the world, bringing together people of diverse backgrounds and traditions, showcasing the rich heritage of Kazakhstan. The contribution of the Guterman family is a wonderful example of how personal initiative can inspire and connect people.
