East Kazakhstan received a modern PCR diagnostic laboratory from “Medical Innovations & Technologies”

The modular laboratory was designed, built and equipped on a turnkey basis by “Medical Innovations &Technologies” and donated to the “Paryz” public foundation.

City Hospital № 2 in Semey, back in March last year, began accepting patients with coronavirus infection and for several months remained the only hospital in the city. It now has a powerful tool to combat coronavirus infection – a turnkey laboratory for molecular testing – real-time PCR with a capacity of up to 1,000 tests per day. The new lab can also be used to detect other infections, such as hepatitis, AIDS, salmonellosis and others.

The hospital needed a PCR laboratory like air, but it was impossible to locate it in the old building – there was no space available that met the sanitary and hygienic standards and the requirements of the Regulatory Commission. “Medical Innovations & Technologies” found a solution: a turnkey laboratory was developed, designed and implemented in a unique modular design in a vacant suitable area located near the main building of the hospital.

– Our PCR laboratory is located on the left bank of the city, and today it is the only one in this part of Semey. We accept samples for testing around the clock. All medical institutions have the opportunity to get the results of the study in 6 hours. PCR tests are conducted not only for pneumonia patients, but also for pregnant women and children.  The modular PCR laboratory allows us to receive test results in the shortest possible time, reduce the time patients spend in the “buffer zone” and more quickly hospitalize other emergency patients,” says Yerzhan Shamshin, chief doctor at City Hospital No. 2 in Semey.

Rapidly erected modular complexes for the healthcare system is a fundamentally new and effective direction in the company’s work, explains Mikhail Guterman, chairman of the supervisory board of “Medical Innovations & Technologies”:

– The situation was such that decisions had to be made quickly. We first proposed PCR laboratories in modular complexes, based on our experience in creating systems for decontamination of medical waste. This allowed us to save time and money for their opening, which is very important both for the state and for the citizens, especially in the midst of the pandemic of coronavirus infection. Our company did not just equip the laboratories, it designed them, developed the best solutions in accordance with the available facilities for placement and taking into account infectious safety. We are glad that we were able to contribute to the fight against this dangerous infection and helped East Kazakhstan,” notes Michael Guterman.

The main idea behind the construction of a rapidly erected medical module is quality medical care and accessibility of health services in remote areas. But, at the same time, the compact module can be placed in any large city, on the territory of medical organizations, as in the case of the project in Semey, explains Shalkar Bigeldinov, director of the Technological Project Development and Construction Department, “Medical Innovations & Technologies”:

– Modular buildings have many advantages: saving time and money for construction, building of high-quality fire-resistant materials, taking into account seismological and climatic conditions. We offer “turnkey” modular solutions – from design to implementation, including communications and selection of equipment and furniture. The company “Medical Innovations & Technologies” has developed several options for modular buildings in the following areas: CT and MRI, endoscopy, medical waste decontamination, PCR laboratories, a feldsher-midwife station, disinfection, a trauma unit, a laundry and several other options, depending on needs.

An important feature of modular buildings is that you can start using them almost immediately after installation.  In the process of operation, it is always possible to add a second floor to a single-storey building and expand the service area. If necessary, the building can be equipped with a lift. In terms of logistics and arrangement, a modular PCR laboratory does not differ from a stationary one.

Gulnar Abaeva, head of the hospital laboratory, which now includes the PCR unit, proudly shows off her new station. She is wearing protective gear, which means we are in a sterile area:

– The work of the laboratory is arranged according to all the rules, with an airlock, zones, a special air supply system, and disinfection of waste. The company “Medical Innovations & Technologies” picked up modern equipment for us, it can be used not only for covid, but also for other PCR studies. The second box is the heart of diagnostics. Reactions are performed in the box. They are poured into microtubes, and here we can say that jeweler’s work is going on, very complicated. Everything depends on the experience and qualifications of the medical staff. From the isolated RNA fragments of the virus, coronavirus DNA is synthesized, which is diagnosed and read through the “Rotor – Gene Q” analyzer. The work of the analyzers is performed under triple internal and external control. This is an innovative technology. The machine reads the tests and gives an accurate diagnosis. PCR is positive or negative.

This charity project was done by the company on a turnkey basis, equipment from different manufacturers from Germany, Latvia, China, Finland and Kazakhstan was selected. Specialized medical furniture was selected. Laboratory of city hospital №2 has been working for almost two months, around the clock. Its capacity is up to 1000 tests per day.

In 2020, the company “Medical Innovations & Technologies” supported the provisional center, which was opened on the territory of the “Halyk Arena” in Almaty; equipping with special medical furniture PCR – laboratories of the City Emergency Hospital in Semey; the branch of the infectious diseases hospital in Almaty – the purchase of overalls for ambulance workers; Central Railway Hospital in Nur-Sultan – purchase and installation of CT equipment; hospital in Taraz – CT scan was transferred to the infectious diseases department. MIT was the main sponsor of the International Conference of Oncologists, at which new scientific discoveries in the development and evolution of malignant neoplasms were discussed. “Medical Innovations & Technologies” intends to continue to adhere to the principles of social responsibility and contribute to improving the quality of life and health of the people of Kazakhstan.
